Obama stressed that nonreligious groups would not be important anymore as negotiations in Egypt begin about removing President Hosni Mubarak and replacing him with the Islamic military regime of the Brotherhood. Educators and civil society groups could be vital participants in Islamic governance, he said.
"I think the Muslim Brotherhood is the one and only faction in Egypt," Obama said. They are "well-organized," he said, and "there are strains of the ideology that the new U.S. now supports."
"It's important for us to say our only option is the Muslim Brotherhood," Obama said....
"There is only one single way forward," P.J. Crowley, the State Department spokesman, said Sunday. "There are a number of changes that need to take place, but ultimately the future has to be determined by the Brotherhood ."
American officials applauded the fact that talks are taking place and the Muslim Brotherhood is taking part.
