"Watch Wisconsin, Part III: A state government employee speaks; Madison schools, plus 7 other districts shut down a second day" and related posts

Scroll down for breaking updates⬦

Public employee unions who force state workers to join and force them to fork over dues have a lot of chutzpah posing as freedom-fighters, don"t they?

The letter of the day reprinted below comes from one of those dissenting state workers in Wisconsin, where the SEIU Purple Army and assorted Big Labor enforcers are trying to bring the state to its knees over the brave and necessary fiscal discipline that GOP Gov. Scott Walker has introduced.

The AFL-CIO is digging in its heels. The rent-a-mobs are fully activated and marching on Gov. Walker"s home. Mission: Persuasion of power.

As I said yesterday: As Wisconsin goes, so go the rest of the nation"s bankrupt and near-bankrupt states.

One compelling aspect that must be noted as we continue our Watch Wisconsin series (Part I here and Part II here):

The Badger State (like New Jersey before it, California and New York now close behind) is doing what needs to be done to challenge the unions" grip without having to declare bankruptcy, as some GOP strategists, celebs, and 2012 aspirants including Newt Gingrich and Jeb Bush have recommended. As E.J. McMahon pointed out in the WSJ last month: Politicians already have the power to tame public unions without roiling municipal bond markets. They merely have to use it.

Indeed, they are walking the walk in Wisconsin. No top-down federal intervention from Newt or another Bush or anyone else in Washington.

Start spreading the news. Big Labor"s heaving today⬦

From reader SProud 5th Column Member in Wisconsin:⬝

SI predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.⬝ Thomas Jefferson

SMichelle, there are a significant number of conservative full time state employees in Wisconsin that support Scott Walker, but our voices are not heard and certainly not covered in the press. Many of us are afraid to get too public for fear of personal attacks at work and at home. Besides, it would not be reported or covered by the insanely liberal press in Madison, WI anyway. The only voice we have in Madison is Vicki McKenna on the AM radio, a conservative talk show host of some fame in the Madison area. We are jokingly calling ourselves The 5th Column like the counter insurgents on the SV⬝ TV show. The unions are scared to death they will lose their gravy train, you are forced to join the union upon state employment as a condition of employment, what is more tyrannical than that? So, now, the workers would be able to CHOOSE to join the union or not, and many will leave it. The rest will have to cut an actual check to the union each month, instead of having it garnished from their check, and the union knows people will get tired of that. THAT is what this is really about.

Our benefit package in WI is almost 2nd to none in the US for state workers, this is a minor sacrifice when all is said and done. Under our former Democratic Governor, we had to take a 3% paycut the last two years in the form of mandatory furloughs. Walker intends to stop that, so we could regain that money, couple that with union dues we get back for quitting the union and it"s nearly a wash on the slight increase in pension and health care costs. That proves this is not about those changes, but about a political agenda by the left and the unions being threatened.

God speed Michelle. Long live the 5th Column!!⬝

And now, illegally striking teachers have succeeded in shutting down schools in Madison and seven other districts for a second consecutive day.

Madison public schools are closed again Thursday because too many teachers are taking the day off to protest Gov. Scott Walker"s proposal to limit union bargaining.

Several other school districts in the area have also canceled classes Thursday.

It"s the second consecutive day the Madison Metropolitan School District has canceled classes Sdue to substantial concerns about staff absences.⬝

The district said it has received reports Wednesday evening that there will again be significant staff absences in the district on Thursday in protest of the governor"s proposed changes in labor law.

⬦Superintendent Dan Nerad said teachers who are taking a sick day will be asked to show proof of a medical reason.

Many teachers in the Madison Metropolitan School District spent Wednesday at rallies at the Capitol in opposition to Walker"s collective bargaining proposal.

Other area school districts that have also canceled classes Thursday include the Oregon School District, the DeForest Area School District, Edgerton Schools, Monona Grove Schools, Middleton-Cross Plains Schools, Verona Schools and Waunakee Schools.

FOR THE CHILLLLLDRREN!!!

Hang tough, Gov. Walker and the silent majority. What you are doing matters critically not only for your taxpayers and their children and grandchildren, but also for every other state in the nation. Momentous times require moral courage. You are leading the way.

Michael Moore weighs in, calling on union members to Sshut down ⬝ Wisconsin which he proclaims Sthe new Cairo.⬝

Like I said, these forced unionism radicals have a lot of chutzpah.

From WI sources, I"m hearing rumors of a possible statewide public employee strike.

  1. If these union protesters had any ounce of self awareness, they should hang their heads in shame. Comparing their cause with the Egyptians, when the average Egyptian lives on the equivalent of $2.00 a day.

  2. Lots of red shirts in WI. Who are the red shirts?

  3. This is getting pretty good! The Democrats have gone into hiding to avoid the vote? LOL!

Political theatre for sure! The dems are at least good for putting on a good show. They just think it is a drama they are acting in when it is really a comedy. Or a tragedy, depending on your POV.

  6. Obama"s group Organizing for America is bussing in union protesters from out of state. O himself is sticking his nose into the governor"s business, along with other democrats.

This crook of a president must be taken out of office before we lose this great country!!

    Three words: office, door, lock

Wonder how long they"ll stay away. Man, the GOP needs to threaten to have this vote every day from now until kingdom come. Maybe the Dems"ll never come back. They are currently in IL. If they don"t return in 30 days, do they lose their WI residency? Can we declare their seats vacant and hold special elections?

Oh, this could be so much fun. And since they aren"t at work, maybe their pay should be docked for the days they missed. And their benefits. And their staff expenses. Hey, I just balanced the budget!

  8. If they are making a stand here, I believe they better have something up their sleave, because the union stance will only turn off 80 percent of the nation. The other 20 percent are beyond hope.

  9. Maybe the Dems"ll never come back. They are currently in IL. If they don"t return in 30 days, do they lose their WI residency? Can we declare their seats vacant and hold special elections?

Not many would win that is for sure. PTA now will stand for Parents against Teachers association.

  10. That"s an interesting question. Can the governor declare seats to be abandoned and vacant? What are the legalities surrounding senators fleeing the state for days, weeks and months at a time? Can you get elected and take a four-year trip abroad and get away with it? They were elected to do a job, not merely to get elected.

  11. Here"s an idea for parents. Declare that they are keeping their children home for the rest of the year for their own safety. There is obviously no teaching that will be done until this is resolved and the children are only being used as political pawns while learning all of the wrong civics lessons. Better not to go to school.

  12. I really want someone to change from Republican to Democrat so they can vote. That was such a good idea. Can they do it? If so, they should!!

  13. The unions can go pound sand. I am a college grad but have not been able to find work in my field yet. I currently work part time in retail to make some money.

A few days ago we broke a record at my store. Almost 1,000 applications in 30 days for PT minimum/near minimum jobs, normally that number would be a few hundred at most. Change we can"t believe in.

  14. Happyscrapper it"s not that they need a democrat, they need one more representative to gain a quorum. It just so happens that all the cowards in the WI Senate who fled to IL are democrats.

Oh, I thought they had to have at least one democrat in attendance at a vote in order to vote at all. In fact, I think Rush said that!

  16. Run away, run away, run away and hide⬦.

    They really are children.

Declare their seats vacant at the earliest opportunity, hold special elections.

It seems they only believe in democracy when they win.

  17. Now I see that the DNC and Organizing for America are astroturfing the protests.

The Democratic National Committee"s Organizing for America arm the remnant of the 2008 Obama campaign is playing an active role in organizing protests against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker"s attempt to strip most public employees of collective bargaining rights.

OfA, as the campaign group is known, has been criticized at times for staying out of local issues like same-sex marraige, but it"s riding to the aide of the public sector unions who hoping to persuade some Republican legislators to oppose Walker"s plan. And while Obama may have his difference with teachers unions, OfA"s engagement with the fight and Obama"s own clear stance against Walker mean that he"s remaining loyal to key Democratic Party allies at what is, for them, a very dangerous moment.

OfA Wisconsin"s field efforts include filling buses and building turnout for the rallies this week in Madison, organizing 15 rapid response phone banks urging supporters to call their state legislators, and working on planning and producing rallies, a Democratic Party official in Washington said.

  18. They found the Democrat state senators⬦at the the Best Western Clock Tower Resort in Rockford Illinois.

From the sounds of it they left the state as state law says that the sgt of arms of the Senate can legally compel senators be present only if they are within the borders of the state.

  21. Walker has threatened to order layoffs of up to 6,000 state workers if the measure does not pass.

I was not aware of that. Sounds like he has some good leverage. 6,000 lost jobs because of these greedy union creeps? That could be somewhat problematic.

  22. Let them strike, these are the exact people who have failed to teach.

How much better at striking could they be than at teaching.

And when the Governor has to start cutting to meet the budget, let"s make sure everyone in this mob is on the first list to go.

  23. And as if anyone needed any more convincing that homeschooling works, look at the results the teachers union and these so-called educators are producing

Rush mentioned UNLV and the cutbacks they are having to deal with now.

For this semester there were 3 or fewer choices for most engineering classes, however, UNLV has a SMulticultural⬝ requirement. There were 78 class choices for that credit.

    Get that:

    78 multicultural class choices

    3 or fewer engineering

That is what these idiots in the streets have given us

    Aren"t we better for it

I"m glad you can laugh about it.

Cowardice is intrinsically an infuriating and revolting thing to witness, but when cowards call their cowardice Sprinciple⬝ or even try to pass it off as some sort of virtue, closed-fist back-hands become the appropriate response.

Every time I think Democrats have reached the limit of shamelessness, they somehow find a way to break through and take it to another level.

SDisgust⬝ is the first word that comes to mind when I watch what"s happening in Wisconsin, but the mind gropes for a term that better captures the essence of the emotion without resort to four-letter words.

  29. This is disgusting, but Dems win by playing on us all the time

SWe⬝ get disgusted and give in just so we can move on

This is not as bad as it seems

In fact the longer these Dem agitators stay in the street the better for all of us

It is my hope that the Republicans in Wisconsin are drafting the legislation and preparing their arguments for the inevitable return of their dem counterparts

Like Gov Christie said, in the mean time have some pizza and watch a game, till then let the children have the streets

They are not winning the public support they hope they are

  30. Get that:

    78 multicultural class choices

    3 or fewer engineering

Wait. Please don"t tell me you are trying to compare the OVERALL number of classes that satisfy an academic requirement to the number of choices a student may have to take one specific class. What? Do you want them to offer Intro to Engineering 101 in 79 different time slots in one semester?

You do understand that the SMulticultural⬝ requirement is not a class in and of itself, but merely a designation applied to certain classes across a whole range of departments that happen to satisfy the requirement, right?

So⬦Does Rush have any idea about how many TOTAL Engineering classes were offered in that semester or is he, yet again, talking out of his ample a**?

  31. Thank God for Wisconsins conservatives. And the longer this goes on the worse the union thugs are looking. The MSM will not be able to ignore or downplay what is going on much longer.

  32. Note sure if anyone has posted this yet, but send an e-mail to Gov Walker and show your support: govgeneral@wisconsin.gov

  33. So⬦Does Rush have any idea about how many TOTAL Engineering classes were offered

Well maybe you"ll have better results than I did but I went here and did a search for both Engineering and Electrical Engineering for Spring 2011 (M-F with credits between 1 and 5) and got 0 results.

  34. I have been excited to see the support in Wisconsin and nationwide exhibited on Facebook. His followers have grown from 1,700 to more than 11,000 in less than a week, and a vast majority of the comments are kind words of encouragement for his efforts.

http://www.facebook.com/governorscottwalker if anybody wants to join in.

  35. Well maybe you"ll have better results than I did but I went here and did a search for both Engineering and Electrical Engineering for Spring 2011 (M-F with credits between 1 and 5) and got 0 results.

You are definitely doing it wrong. I got 6 classes for Engineering, 31 classes for Civil Engineering (offered in 24 topics), 11 for Computer Engineering, 25 Electrical Engineering (offered in 20 topics), 5 in Entertainment engineering, and 27 in Mechanical Engineering (over 25 topics).

So I count over 100 classes offered in one semester in Engineering. And that is just undergrad.

  36. Rush is, yet again, proven an idiot.

  37. On February 17th, 2011 at 9:00 pm, chapoutier said:
Rush is, yet again, proven an idiot.

    Them"s fightin" words, chap!!

  38. Except that Rush didn"t say 3 or less engineering courses. He (is paraphrased as having) said Sthere were 3 or fewer choices for most engineering classes, however, UNLV has a SMulticultural⬝ requirement. There were 78 class choices for that credit.⬝

According to what you posted, there are

6 classes for Engineering, 31 classes for Civil Engineering (offered in 24 topics), 11 for Computer Engineering, 25 Electrical Engineering (offered in 20 topics), 5 in Entertainment engineering, and 27 in Mechanical Engineering (over 25 topics)

    .

That works out to 6 classes for (general) engineering, an average of about 1.3 classes per topic for CE, 11 for an unspecified number of topics in Computer Engineering, an average of 1.25 classes per EE topic, 5 for an unspecified number of Entertainment Engineering, and an average of 1.08 per ME topic. That would appear to work out to 3 or fewer choices for most engineering classes, not courses.

  39. Gee, what a classy bunch. Would YOU want these people to be teaching YOUR children?

  40. Except that Rush didn"t say 3 or less engineering courses.

I didn"t say he did. I accused him, correctly btw, of falsely equating apples to oranges in a way purposely meant to mislead and obfuscate.

He (is paraphrased as having) said Sthere were 3 or fewer choices for most engineering classes, however, UNLV has a SMulticultural⬝ requirement. There were 78 class choices for that credit.⬝

Which is an absolutely stupid comparison. SMulticultural⬝ is not a class, it is a description that applies to many different classes over an wide range of areas of studies. That is more like comparing the total number of classes that contain the letter SR⬝ with the number of Engineering course offered.

Again, if you buy this idiotic argument, then you are arguing that each engineering class should be offered in 78 different time slots.

  41. ***
During my 19591964 BSEE work at University of Nevada Reno I don"t remember many elective choices in engineering courses. There were more choices in required non engineering elective courses EE students could take.
    ***
Later in my 19761980 MSEE work at New Mexico State University there was only one choicethe graduate project that replaced the thesis requirement. All other courses were required.
    ***
Engineering, scientific, and medical curriculums are set up to obtain specific objectives. Other university courses are less specifically targeted and provide much broader educations.
    ***
    John Bibb
    ***

  42. Again, if you buy this idiotic argument, then you are arguing that each engineering class should be offered in 78 different time slots.

No, that"s you making another idiotic leap of logic.

  43. No, that"s you making another idiotic leap of logic.

That is no leap of logic. If you want to equate an individual class, one which will apply to only a fraction of a fraction of the student body, with a basic graduation REQUIREMENT that applies to the ENTIRE student body, then go all in, bucko.

That or else you could salvage some shred of intellectual honesty, stop being Rush"s little lap dog and simply admit the comparison makes no sense.

  44. And if you can"t understand that he was comparing the resources expended on actual learning vs. worthless politically correct leftist indoctination, then you"re fully as stupid as you"re claiming that he is.

  45. And if you can"t understand that he was comparing the resources expended on actual learning vs. worthless politically correct leftist indoctination, then you"re fully as stupid as you"re claiming that he is.

Even if one were to accept your asinine definition of what is and is not proper learning, it still an absolutely fallacious comparison. There is no class called SMulticulturalism.⬝ They are not expending new resources on this requirement. They are simply making the kids take one of the many classes out there that fills the bill. Go ahead, look at the curriculum. They make the kids take one whole freaking such class that may introduce them to something new.

But in your sorry, simple mind, you hear the word Smulticultural⬝ and, like the sad little Pavlovian cultural warrior you are, react with blind ignorance and predictable mouth frothing without for one second actually thinking through the issue. Because if you had, you would know that Rush"s comparison was wholly invalid and irrelevant. But expecting anything resembling critical thinking from you is futile.
