According to the Post, Edsall and his family are headed to College Park, Md. Sunday to tour the school. The Post cites four anonymous sources in saying that Edsall has leapfrogged Leach as the man most desired by Maryland brass.
Ralph Friedgen was Maryland's coach for the past decade and, despite winning ACC coach of the year, was dismissed following the 2010 season -- which ended with a 51-20 win in the Military Bowl. The Post reports that immediately after that game, Leach met with Maryland officials and his interview reportedly went well -- though concerns about past turmoil have been present throughout the process.
Edsall has no such baggage.
The 52-year-old has led UConn from Division I-AA to the Big East and overseen the program move from an upstart to a BCS bowl participant. The Huskies have won at least eight games for the past four seasons and six total times in Edsall's tenure. Perhaps more importantly, Edsall has no past off-field issues.
Maryland has publicly announced it would like to have a coach in place by Jan. 4, so the official announcement should be coming very soon.
UPDATE: Maryland has made the deal official. It has hired Edsall as the new coach.
